BAE Systems, Inc. Case Study: Elevating EX for the Modern Employee

BAE Systems ran annual or bi-annual engagement surveys for all employees. This was useful, but spent too much time on the survey process, and too little time on action. The team wanted to expand the types of surveys deployed and who could issue them to increase insights and drive action. They needed a solution that was flexible, agile, scalable and customizable. Four years later, the team is now benefiting from the Confirmit Horizons platform in a variety of ways.

BAE Systems, Inc. delivers a range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, and for advanced electronics, security, IT solutions, and customer support services. Its employees deal with highly sensitive information in their roles, so it is critical to ensure that the company hire, train and retain a high-quality workforce. Doing that requires developing a clear understanding of the experiences of employees.

Historically, the company ran annual or bi-annual engagement surveys for all employees. This was useful, but spent too much time on the survey process, and too little time on action. The team wanted to expand the types of surveys deployed and who could issue them to increase insights and drive action.

They needed a solution that was flexible, agile, scalable and customizable to support two key areas of the business; ethics and the employee journey. BAE understands that the modern employee has a wide range of needs and meeting them requires strong managers who can meet those needs. But when employees are based in often-remote, offline locations, and needs change regularly, an annual employee engagement survey just wasn’t up to the job. An agile approach to the employee experience was needed, based on touchpoint surveys that could drive action, not just slide decks.

For a business like BAE Systems, trust is critical. Not only trust from customers, but for employees as well. The ethics survey, run on Confirmit Horizons allows the Ethics team to listen to employees and provide avenues for them to start conversations whenever they feel that there is a danger of ethics being compromised.

“We have a data-driven culture. We’re an engineering company, and engineers like to make decisions based on data. Having the ability to measure the before and after, to measure the perceived impact of the new hire from the manager’s point-of-view, the onboarding experience from the new hire’s point-of-view, from an ethics perspective and from engagement perspective – provides invaluable data that helps us make important decisions and take appropriate action.” - Mike Kessler, Chief Learning Officer at BAE Systems
