As you may have noted, we’ve expanded our celebration of International Women’s Day to a full week this year (clearly one day is NOT enough!) My colleagues, Kat Stroud and Bairbre Cunningham have already shared posts that talk about the creation of our internal Employee Resource Group for women, and about the session we held on IWD in which women across the business shared their challenges and inspirations in storyboards.

Along with Kat and Bairbre, I am part of the leadership of our ERG group, and one of my main goals is to make sure the group is interactive. We’ve created four sub-groups and my hope is that more women in the group who feel passionately about those topics will step up and take leadership roles to steer those conversations.

One of the main reasons for wanting this is that we must have diversity across the group. I want ALL the different types of M&Ms! Having diversity of thought is what makes a team strong, giving us a range of perspectives and experiences. And this is something that’s true across any group or business, not just our ERG. If we’re all the same, we’ll only have one perspective and if nothing else – that would be very boring!

So, even within our group, we need to be inclusive. And that means including men’s views. Not because we want or need men to speak on our behalf, but because we want both men and women to be able to speak up when they see things that aren’t right. One of the men who joined our meeting yesterday told me later that he wasn’t sure if he should join at first, but wanted to know if he might be doing things “wrong” without realizing.

I think that’s really important. The more voices we have, the stronger that voice becomes. And to my colleague’s point, you don’t know what you don’t know. Unconscious bias is just that – unconscious, so communication is really important. Plus, communication is more that many people realize, it’s about tone. It’s about what people hear when you speak.

The more people learn, and the more we as an evolving group within Confirmit learn, the more we can all reflect on what we can do to be a better citizen of the world. And a better citizen of Confirmit!
