International Women’s Day 2021 is the first year for which Confirmit has had its dedicated Women’s Group. We launched it last year and you may have seen my colleague Kat’s post about how we’re building our foundations. After many years at Confirmit, I feel like I’ve got a pretty good grasp on where we are getting things right as a business and where there is room for a little improvement, so I was delighted to become part of the leadership group to help steer us in the right direction.

Establishing that direction is critical, and the great news is that we have no shortage of dedicated, smart, creative women to get us there. My vision is that the group is not only a driving force for change in the business, but that it creates a space where women can be open and honest about their experiences of work, their ideas and hopes, and their broader lives as well. None of us is only a job title, and I want to ensure that everyone in our group has what they need to be the best version of themselves.

Another important element is having support from our executive leadership team. The group has a dedicated exec sponsor in Rebecca Wright, our Chief Legal Officer, who has been instrumental in getting the group up and running.

One thing I am really keen to do is to give everyone in the group a space to be themselves and to share their stories – the good stuff and the challenges. To this end, one of our activities for IWD 2021 has been to create storyboards which many of us shared in our session to celebrate yesterday. I’d seen the storyboards in advance, so I had an idea about what each person might be talking about, but I honestly wasn’t prepared for hearing from the group.

The first thing that struck me was how incredibly candid everyone was in sharing their stories. From funny things that we could all relate to, to truly emotional stories about the challenges that people have faced in their lives beyond work. There were women I have worked with for years who shared things that I knew nothing about until yesterday, and it became a really moving session. As an exercise, I really recommend it for any groups in a business who are working to better understand each other.

Finally, we did allow some men to join us! As well as storyboards from male colleagues, our CEO Kyle Ferguson was part of the conversation, talking about the women who have played an instrumental role in his life, both inspiring him and keeping grounded.

I hope you had a wonderful International Women’s Day. I am looking forward to us continuing to share our ideas, celebrating our teams, and recognizing our amazing customers and partners for the whole week!
