ESOMAR Congress 2018: Brilliance in Berlin - A recap of the major talking points at one of the best market research events

Phew! We’re back from ESOMAR Congress and as always, it was a huge event. Over 1200 people from 70 countries all gathered in Berlin for four days of fantastic Market Research action. The Confirmit team was there from the opening moments to the final whistle and we’re all agreed that it was the best Congress ever (and that’s up against some pretty strong competition).

There’s far too much to summarize in one blog post, but there are a few highlights it’s worth revisiting.

As you’d expect, there was a lot of focus on areas like GDPR which have had a huge impact on the MR industry over the past few months, and which we all agree would continue to have an effect for the foreseeable future. One of the talking points was that much of the time, customer intelligence is too focused on data collection rather than analysis and delivering insight through consulting. With new privacy rules meaning companies need to be careful about when and how they contact customers, it might force that to change somewhat.

Naturally, another topic that dominated the event was automation. From robots to Alexa to image-based AI - ethics to how the gap between humans and machines is closing by the day, AI was never far from people’s lips during networking breaks.

The same was true during a networking dinner that we hosted at the fabulous Grill Royal restaurant. The Confirmit team was joined by a few dozen guests for an evening of great conversation about the future of Market Research – plus plenty of great food and a few drinks, of course. Hosted by Confirmit’s MR experts from EMEA and the US as well as our CEO and other members of the exec team, I think it’s safe to say all involved had a brilliant evening.

The other big thing for the Confirmit team was the announcement of the winners of the inaugural AIR (Achievement in Insight and Research) Awards. The awards recognize MR agencies and projects that demonstrate innovation and excellence in their fields. We were delighted to be joined at the Confirmit booth by several of the winners who were congratulated by our CEO, Ken Østreng. We’re very excited by the success of the first AIR Awards and are already looking forward to getting started with the 2019 awards next summer!

By the time we all made it back from the event, we were exhausted. But it was a hugely informative, engaging and enjoyable few days, surrounded by the best and brightest in the world of Market Research. Roll on ESOMAR Congress 2019!
